Bumbershoot was written Spring 2023 for Luna Composition Lab, inspired by the frequent changes of weather in Florida and the changing sky perspective from under an umbrella. From the gloomy void before rain, to the rain showers amidst wind, to the blazing sun that comes out after, my piece experiments with fading and emerging textures to highlight each portion of the piece.

The audience should listen for the presence of wind with the rain and the insistency of the sun. Amidst the pitter-patter of the rain, the flute and clarinet swirl up with nothing but air, and in the blazing sun, each instrument sustains notes, cumulating upon each other to make blocks of ever-present sound.
