White Bone was written in Spring 2023 for the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestras, inspired by the Tribulation of the White Bone Spirit (三打白骨精) in the broader setting of the popular Chinese novel Journey to the West (西遊記)—the legendary voyage of Monkey King Sun Wukong (孫悟空) and his master, the monk (唐三藏), in their journey to enlightenment. The audience should listen for the contrasting voices of the shape-shifting white bone spirit and other characters on the voyage such as the pig (豬八戒), created through solo instrument features, as well as motific shifts through harmonic and rhythmic setting.
